Joseph was the son of Herbert and Emily Kershaw of Manchester. He was married to Nesta May Kershaw of Brook's Bar, Manchester.
There is no doubt that Joseph was the WOP (Wireless Operator) on the night his aircarft was lost, but there is some doubt as to whether the picture is of Joseph Kershaw: it is taken from a photograph of five of the original crew at Elvington airfield where he is described by fellow aircrew member John Richardson (q.v.) simply as 'Big Mac - WOP'.
